Academy Award®-winning director Oliver Stone, who brought Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, Wall Street and JFK to the big screen, tackles the most important and fascinating true story of the 21st century. Snowden, the politically-charged, pulse-pounding thriller starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley, reveals the incredible untold personal story of Edward Snowden, the polarizing figure who exposed shocking illegal surveillance activities by the NSA and became one of the most wanted men in the world. He is considered a hero by some, and a traitor by others. How to remove algae from a pond easily and without chemicals

This blog post is intended to share my experience about the best way to to remove algae from a pond. If your pond is covered in algae like mine in the image below read on.

After much research I learned the safest way was to manually remove the algae from the pond. I started using a garden rake when the wind pushed the algae to one end of the pond and pulling the algae onto shore. This approach was labor intensive and not very effective. I later traded the garden rake for a much larger landscaper's rake mounted on a twelve foot telescoping pole. I zip tied a piece of foam pool noodle to the top of the rake so it floated. That made it much easier but still extremely labor intensive. There must be a better way.

I thought it would be great if I could skim the pond scum off the pond without wielding the rake. Wait, skim, skimmer, as in pool skimmer. Same idea but could I make it work? I had a spare submersible sewage pump and the beginnings of a plan.

I cut an opening in one end of a Tupperware storage tote so when it was submerged in the pond the opening was about a half inch below the water line. You'll need to weigh down the tote, I placed a large landscaping paver inside and other weights resting on top. After mounting the sewage pump, the prototype was ready for testing. It worked like a charm and cleared a one-acer pond in only 48 hours. I remade it using a stronger container with a lid to better secure the sump pump. See the videos below to see it in action.
